Trust Yourself to Follow Your Inner Voice
Let’s continue to talk about the role of healing in the coaching process.
As I guide my clients through their life journeys, the key to success is progressively more profound and includes cumulative healing and rejuvenation. You will become empowered to choose your full potential through mental, emotional, spiritual, and sometimes physical change. These changes support your happiness and fulfillment: creating a rewarding career aligned with your life purpose, successful relationships based on trust and communication, and attaining a happy, healthy, fulfilling life. I define healing as the permanent restoration of health and well-being in areas of reduced function and rejuvenation as the process of bringing your entire self to a higher level of function than you’ve ever experienced before.
One of my most important roles as your coach is to hold a space of possibility without judgment, a safe place of potential from which I guide you to gradually deeper levels of awareness. Over time, you acquire discernment and confidence to recognize your inner voice and truth, honor it, and follow it to make your best choices with the information and understanding you have at the time. Learning to know and trust yourself is an essential part of the healing process.
What does it look like when you learn to trust yourself? My client “Pat” is a great example. Pat spent years working with underprivileged children. She was passionate about helping them but became burned out and was underpaid. As we began coaching together, she asked me to hold her to a high standard, as she wanted to fulfill her potential. She also wanted to become more confident and to feel worthy. She gave me a list of her ideas so far: flower shop, cookie company, private childcare.
I knew that these ideas wouldn’t sustain her over time, so we kept exploring. Then she remembered how much she loved to write and even won some awards as a young adult. When I saw the light in her eyes, I knew we were on to something. As she visualized the possibilities, she knew that becoming a professional writer was “it” for her. She would write for children, no question.
My recognition of her truth helped her to envision her path more clearly and trust it. As she began to focus, her deeper fears arose, and as she released them one by one, she was able to show up with confidence and authenticity. As I continued to hold her to her highest standard, she learned to feel and hear the inner voice that resonated with that standard. She began to express herself without worrying so much about what other people thought. As we continue to work together, I guide her through issues and questions that arise. She is learning and growing continuously at her full potential, just as she wanted to, driven by the inner voice that she now recognizes easily.
Your inner voice expresses your core values. When your decisions and actions are grounded in your core values—the fundamental truths that you consider most important—then you can use the wisdom of your highest self to create the life you want. When you commit to this process, along the way, you heal by removing the layers of inauthentic expectations put on you by others. As a result, you become more confident and less concerned with what others think of you–and that’s just one example of the many ways you can heal as you connect with and express your true self.
