Intuition is an essential aspect of my work with clients. It allows me to see the bigger picture, read between the lines, and pick up on information others might not pick up on to help my clients get the most out of our coaching relationship. It’s often misunderstood or overlooked in our culture but is incredibly valuable for approaching life holistically.
What is Intuition?
We are all born with senses and use them daily: seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, and smelling. We use these senses to learn about what’s happening around us. Intuition is interacting with the more subtle details we receive in situations, providing another layer of information. Combining intuition with our other senses allows us to see a “whole picture” view of our circumstances, leading to decisions and actions that honor our values and life purpose.
Why is Intuition Important?
The Mayans believed that we all have a “Life Purpose,” the underneath rudder or compass that steers our decisions and leads us to create the life we want. I work through this concept with my clients because when we align with our Life Purpose by doing what we love, are good at, and care about, we create the life we want to live.
Intuition allows us to quiet the logical, puzzle-solving parts of our brain that focus on worries and anxieties and tap into our hearts and values. It enables us to make decisions that align with our life purpose and solve problems that arise in our lives.
For example, if a client comes to me and tells me they are really stressed out, I’ll ask them to pause and look inward to see what is showing up. What is causing them stress: bills, a belief, or an old way of thinking? As we peel back the loud things showing up, it gives space to listen to the more subtle information intuitively to resolve the stress or underlying problem and realign them with their Life Purpose.
Intuition and Leadership
One of the most essential qualities for leaders is good communication. When we communicate with people, we constantly use intuition. If you use your intuition to pick up on subtle nuances and emotions before they get loud, you can address them calmly and clearly. As a leader, this allows you to identify pain points within your team before they escalate into significant problems.
Intuition allows you to dive underneath the emotions and behaviors on the surface to understand why people respond how they do, see situations as a whole, and make decisions to resolve issues with clarity.
Intuition and Coaching
When coaching clients, I aim to address their issues with as much clarity and as little judgment as possible. I guide them beyond the surface of their issues to gain full awareness of the situation and its contributing factors. That guidance is intuition. During our sessions, we begin to use the subtle information I receive to create clarity, always bringing the root back to what they want in their lives and how they can achieve it.
Intuition is like a muscle: the more you use it, the stronger it gets. One key piece we work on in coaching is learning how to quiet your mind, often through meditation, to strengthen your intuition. The more we practice quieting all of the loudness and our logical brain, the more trusting our intuition, without judgment, becomes our natural instinct.
Intuition is a powerful tool, both in coaching and in our daily lives. Learning to harness its power takes practice but allows for a holistic approach and insight into every situation. If you’re curious about learning more, click here to schedule a connection call.
