In my last blog on meditation, I shared how this practice can be used to uplift, calm and awaken you to your inner voice for sustained healing. Though meditation is a useful healing modality in itself, with practice, it becomes a building block for another tool: intuition. You may recognize intuition as a “gut feeling” or “sixth sense” that can’t really be explained, and is usually discredited in our culture. In this blog, we’ll take a look at where those unexplainable feelings come from and how to train your mind and body to be more intuitive.
Listening to Your Inner Voice Starts with Focus
Meditation teaches you to focus. That ability can sometimes be very practical—can you sit in a house full of busy people and pets, with chaos around you, and still focus on an important task or train of thought? In addition to its use in everyday life, when you’re learning to recognize and trust your inner voice, the process is similar. You start with a mind full of other people’s ideas, distractions and “truths” that don’t resonate with you, and you learn to disregard the noise and hear your deeper wisdom clearly. This is why meditation is a foundational skill for creatives—it allows people to tap into their truest self and use it to imagine many different ideas and possibilities.
Developing Your Intuitive Ability
As you listen to your inner voice more and more, you’re tapping into your intuition. At the simplest level, intuition can be explained as the process of obtaining direct knowledge without evident linear, rational thinking. It is quick and ready insight, the knowledge and nuanced awareness of your deeper wisdom or inner voice. That’s why, when you learn to recognize your inner voice through meditation, you build your intuitive ability. While some people are born knowing how to access and use intuition—just like some people are born with perfect pitch—anyone can learn to use it and improve their skills.
Embracing Your Intuition
In Western culture, we’ve learned to be skeptical of intuition or ignore it altogether. But it’s just another perception, like sight or hearing, that allows us to gather and interpret information. In fact, it’s often called the “sixth sense.” And, like our other senses, it improves with training. We know that someone can train their sense of taste to identify differences between different vintage years of the same wine, or they can train their sense of touch to tell different grades of fiber, or they can train their hearing to identify pitch. It’s really not much of a leap to consider that the sixth sense of intuition can also become more powerful as you become more familiar with it.
Intuition for Healing
Many of my clients become more intuitive during our work together because they perceive more clearly how their thought processes work and what that authentic inner voice sounds like as they release deep pain that has muddled their thinking. My own intuition is a game-changer in my client’s healing journey as it allows me to sense behind and beyond the literal, then bring that information back to physical reality to act on it. Using intuition, I can home in on the best questions to ask that are clear, clean, and specific. I can interpret information accurately and communicate to you how best to apply it.
Intuition is exciting to work with because it aligns the intellectual component and creativity of puzzle-solving with the deeper information that comes from wisdom. Your experience of the physical world and your inner experience meet to combine both knowledge and wisdom for the best results.
