Finding Your “Aha!” Moments

Over the past few months, we’ve been talking about empowerment. One of the cornerstones we looked at is empowering yourself by envisioning possibilities. Today, we’re going to go deeper with this concept. It’s one of the most powerful and exciting tools I use as a coach to really get clients to their next level.

Let’s revisit some of the fundamentals. Empowered visioning is the process of learning to see what could be true, so that you have enough inspiration and belief to explore it. When you can see your goal or dream, you can act strategically to move toward it. This is different from the way we frequently do things. Often, we seek change because we are in pain. When we feel bad enough, we run away from the pain.

While this can be enough motivation to get started, this approach usually fails over time. As we move away from the pain, the intensity, and our motivation to keep going fade. We are once lulled back towards the familiar and start doing what we’ve always done. And the cycle continues as the pain builds until we’re prompted to move away from it again, and again.

Sound familiar?

Let’s change the pattern and end the cycle. With empowered visioning, you can move toward your goal rather than away from pain. As you move forward, your desired result becomes clearer and more tangible, inspiring you to stay on track. It feels easier and better to move toward what you want, rather than away from what you don’t.

But what if you’re unclear on how to envision what you want? That’s where having a guide to help you explore the process and possible directions can help.

I help you start by exploring ideas that feel enjoyable and uplifting to you. They could be memories of inspiring moments, examining the details of goals you’ve met in the past and how you got there, projects you’ve completed where you were so involved in and fully engaged that you lost all sense of time. We look for repeatable positive patterns, strong skills, and foundational qualities you already have; and sometimes we look at the people you admire and explore why they are important to you and how you might apply those qualities in your own life.

We take this information and explore it in a safe environment where there are no mistakes—just learning opportunities. Finding ways to leverage your skills and abilities, while keeping in mind the criteria you’ve set helps you move beyond what you’ve seen as your limitations. By envisioning possibilities as if they are true and seeing how they resonate with you, we can determine whether a scenario we are exploring is one of your potential paths.

And then, we arrive at your “Aha!” moment, that’s when we know you’ve found your path. It’s one of those moments where it resonates deeply and feels right – sometimes it even feels electric. It’s the idea that feels exciting, yet familiar and comforting at the same time. It’s like coming home but also looking through a window at an exciting new landscape. Helping clients get to that moment is one of the things I love about coaching and as we work together, you’ll deepen your intuition to better understand your full potential, and recognize these moments more easily.

For many of us, when we focus on visioning, there will be more than one option that resonates and feels like it could be right. It’s here where we go to the next level of authenticity and intuition and learn to apply discernment in making choices among two or more potential paths. For example, if your life purpose is to uplift children, you could write books, teach kindergarten, or fundraise for an organization that you admire.

Making good choices is a skill set you’ll refine as well—you’ll get comfortable thinking more broadly about your path and your goal, as well as the ways in which it involves people other than yourself. You want to be sure that if your vision involves working with others, that they are the right people to enhance your purpose and lead to a positive, productive outcome. You will want to consider how different paths will affect other people in your life. You’ll also want to think about whether your chosen path requires support or buy-in from your loved ones, and if so, how to get them excited about your vision and commitment.

No matter what your vision is and how many paths resonate as ways to get to your dream, it’s important to remember that nothing is carved in stone—circumstances change, you change, understanding deepens. The ability to pivot and be flexible while still staying committed to growth is another key you’ll learn as we work with empowered visioning.
